Talking about my dad as a refugee last post made me want to draw a little bit of his story.

Most of his family went by plane but, for reasons he doesn’t really tell me, he and his second to youngest brother went by boat. The family often talks about how he became such a strong swimmer for the days stranded out there and that the boat they were on was basically a row boat.

I remember my dad trying to tell me the story in English, which isn’t very good. He kept insisting that all they brought with them was rice and watermelon. I’m pretty sure he meant water.

That younger brother of his was essentially the darling of the family. He was a sick man who had contracted hepatitis B at a young age and so everyone in the family would often worry over him. He died some years back and I’m pretty sure his death was the only time my dad cried at a funeral.

Thinking back on this story I think about that boat that left Cuba. After being stranded for only two hours some people on the boat had already been murdered out of panic. The ocean is incredible, it’s so vast and daunting, I’ve always been impressed that my dad could make amends with it.

Also, hey! Like my dad’s nice 1970s hairdo? We always get a good laugh looking at his old pictures.

heavy stuff.

on a lighter note: 70s hairdo wins~ haha
I like how you've started to colour the water. you didn't before, right? adding one colour makes a big difference but it goes well with the rest in black and white like this, I think.

@jonasfx: Ah, I did it... when I felt like it. Haha. In this case, the ocean always had an important role in my life so I thought I'd show it some respect. I wish I had time to make the comics fancier.

@daviddoesntgetit: I hear you. the hard thing I think with making comics is making them so fancy without drawing them taking too much time and hindering the making of more comics.

i think you and your dad are really alike in this spread, the way he wanted to take care of his brother reminds me of you and miriam.

@Annab1119: Ah, interesting. I usually think Bernard's my biggest influence but you're probably right there.

Haha, I had trouble commenting the one time I had to. Didn't realize it was just the text, I thought it was asking me if these reader comments were comments, haha.
