I’ve never lived in Vietnam so I don’t know how applicable this is to the culture.

There is no precedence for being specifically patriarchal or matriarchal, in fact there’s often a stereotype in Vietnam of the wife being stronger than the husband. On my mother’s side of the family, since my grandpa kinda ditched everyone, my grandma’s the head.

My mother’s side of the family is also nearly all females and they’re all loyal to their mother so their husbands actually went to live with them near their mother. On my mother’s side of the family, the extended family meet under my grandma, the females rule. In a way they are the more conservative side.

On my father’s side of the family it’s gotten pretty American at this point with all the children focused on their children, which does happen eventually. My father being the first born son should have been the head but he ended up being a black sheep. We don’t really have large family gatherings as we used to, if we do we meet at his younger brother’s.

My grandpa didn’t care about genders so his first born grandchild is actually a girl, even though it should have been Bernard.

I know this is all rather confusing as I’m probably not explaining it well having grown up in it. If you guys have any more questions, feel free to ask and I’ll explain it in an easier to understand comic form.

@stupidarghs: Haha, that's the whole point of an open diary, right? Is to share your more intimate details.

Haha. Feel free to call me whatever you want.

The way your family operates sounds pretty similar to how most african-american families are. My mother's side of the family is run by mostly women as well. The menfolk tend to not get much say. xD

hm.. come to think of it, I did military training with a nguyen. we only called each other by last name so I can't remember his first. he was a real player though with a fiencee in his homeland and several girlfriends around in sweden. I never knew what to say about that, besides that I didn't approve of it @_@;
