A scene from my paternal grandfather’s funeral.

In Vietnam it is customary to wear a white shirt and black slacks to a funeral and not all black like an American one. And I can’t remember but I think at the funeral the family members wear a headband? Or the immediate family? I think it’s the immediate.

In Vietnam funerals are huge town affairs. People carry the body through the streets and it takes all day.

This might be interesting to you. In Vietnam there’s a different word for your grandparents depending on what side of the family they’re from. “Ong” is for the males (and strangers two generations above you) and “ba” is for females (also for strangers two generations above you). For the father’s side it’s “noi” and for the mother’s side it’s “ngoai”. So Ong Ngoai vs. Ong Noi. Ong Ngoai=Maternal grandfather and Ong Noi=Paternal grandfather.

So the grandpa that died was my ong noi, which is incredibly confusing when you’re talking to your cousin and their mother is related to your father’s father. So for Tien here the one who died was her Ong Ngoai but for us it was our Ong Noi.

Haha. Ah. It’s ok if you don’t follow. It’s not important.
