Beldon123 asked:

“A question for you, actualy; Is there anyone in particular, be they someone you know personaly or otherwise, whom you simply CANNOT stand? Like, loathe entirely? (or something close to that)”

Hey, sorry that I didn’t update yesterday. Something was wrong and there was this massive tablet lag in Photoshop that I’ve since fixed.

You might recognize this aunt in a comic where Connor called her a bitch and yelled at her for not teaching her kids Vietnamese.

On another note, to those that don’t know, the GT program was the gifted/talented program which I assume meant accelerated courses, i.e. taking algebra early what have you. I’m positive there was no way I would have been recommended if our stepmom wasn’t the type to drill things into our heads early.

That leads to you taking AP courses in… high school I think. Which are supposedly college level courses you can take in high school.

I ended up not doing that when I realized I was really terrible at English. I think Miriam and Bernard both took as much as they could, the two of them were always hard workers at school. Connor took what he liked.

Haha, my grades have always been a little below average. I guess unless it was art I didn’t really care.

I think it’s all kinda stupid. It’s a good thing our mother isn’t as competitive in the raising-kids department like her older sister here, the four of us have had more relaxing lives than most Asian kids it seems.

I dunno. Kids have a mind of their own. Looking at Tien I feel like she knew best what she wanted. I think she grew up just fine.

Concerning northern and southern Vietnamese… I’ll address it in the next comic.

Talented And Gifted

lil_shiro July 20th, 2012, 2:14 pm

I was a part of TAG Which is Talented And Gifted for like 4-5 years. Put me into all the advanced classes. I of course thought I wasn't as smart as people told me so i slacked off and failed all the classes. XD Now I am at the normal grade level classes and think they are easy. I..I am stupid. XD

hoshi.neko July 20th, 2012, 2:19 pm

Haha, I know how it feels when relatives are super-competitive like that. I guess this is why I like reading your comics - your life has so many parallels with my own. Luckily, my parents are pretty lax about grades too, even though they are also Asian.

In my high school, you can take AP courses if you hand in an application; no gifted and talented program thing. I'm planning to take some sciences and maybe English, because I have always liked to write.

My mother also works in an office, so I always hear about her life with coworkers. XD

daviddoesntgetit July 20th, 2012, 3:19 pm

@lil_shiro: Hahaha. Tien said she felt the same way. On a lower grade AP course she had to write a 20 page essay of motifs in "A Tale of Two City" and then in regular English in senior year she had to write a letter to an author they read about anything they wanted.

The gap is just too baffling.

@hoshi.neko: Haha, glad my comics ring true. Hey! We both got cool parents.

But yeah, competitive relatives. I feel bad for their kids mostly, I wonder how much pressure they have to deal with?

Hm, I think anyone could take the AP classes too but the ones that did were generally the ones who had a history of taking harder courses.

Good luck on your AP courses, I hope you find them enriching. I only took AP art and I enjoyed that, haha.

Haha. I don't work in an office, it's a studio but we work with a lot of businesses making commercial work for them so we have business people on our team as intermediaries. I don't usually like them, haha. I get along better with the other artists.

There are very few people I actually dislike. In fact, there may only be one.

In band class I play bass. There are only 2 people in out corner section, myself, and a kid named addison. He's probably one of the only people I actually dislike enough to say anything about.

Also, I was designated as "gifted". I was never really provided with any programs or anything.. Actually, just recently they took away my designation simply because they couldn't provide any special education. I don't really mind, but my mom was upset about it.

I do remember one time they sent me to a special class... I went somewhere to make airplanes.....

I love seeing everybody when they were younger! Connor and Miriam looks adorable. =>A<= I almost didn't recognize Miriam at first due to her hair!
As for the the G/T program, I never had one where I was taught at so I can't say much about it. ^^; My mom is rather easygoing with me, as long as I get C's or above and never get into things like drugs, detention, or getting bullied. I know she'll love me no matter what grades I make, so that makes me happy! X3 That's why I tend to get good grades despite her lax standards.
And I COMPLETELY understand about dealing with passive-aggressive relatives. It's so hard to be polite to them!!! =___=* I cannot be quiet and polite to save my life!
I am glad that Tien turned out fine despite having such strict parents. I don't know if I would've! REBELLION!!! =A=*

@roxjey: Haha, aw, don't be bitter. That's never worth your time.

@Jump: Hm, I see. I think as you get older those things lack value.

In any case, making airplanes sounds really badass.

@nemuko-tatsuya: Ah, I'm not saying people are pure shit, haha. I just don't like socializing, they could be the most wonderful people and I wouldn't like them because I'd have to talk to them.

This and that are different.

Whatever the case, don't let them get to you. You have your life and they have theirs.

@mavi: Hahaha, for some reason Miriam was very anti putting her hair up until college for some reason. I thinks he deemed it too girly or some nonsensical reason.

So you can guess where she is in her life based on how I draw her hair, hahaha.

Ah, that's great to hear. Hahaha, don't worry! Those passive-aggressive relatives are tough but if you can be polite to them, that's already pretty good.

Connor can never hold himself back though, hahaha.

bakura240 July 23rd, 2012, 6:11 am

I have an aunt kind of like that (though her kids are genuinely smarter than I am haha) She always e-mails my mum to say how they got A's all this shit. Elitist relatives suck ass.

daviddoesntgetit July 29th, 2012, 5:09 pm

@bakura240: Hahaha. Being smarter means nothing if you're just gonna be a dick about it.

And yes, they do suck.

jonasfx August 7th, 2012, 5:44 pm

wow, I'd hate to be their daughter! not to fuel stereotypes but have you heard about the internet meme "High Expectations Asian Father"? this kind of makes me think of that...

also, thumbs up for the bonding with coworkers haha
