Bernard seemed to really like having us around, haha. He and dad are the same, always trying to convince us to stay overnight.

Banh tom chien- http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3276/2753502674_5dfa1707d6.jpg

Bernard likes to mix in regular potatoes with sweet potatoes and Miriam eats it with just hot sauce while the rest of us eats it the regular way with lettuce and fish sauce.

Oh god, I'm really hungry.

...For some reason I feel kinda racist, because "lettuce and fish sauce" sounds like the most disgusting thing in the world. >_>''

Woah, just saw a picture of the banh tom chien and it looks like the most beautiful thing in the world right now. *Drools* Mmm... sweet potatoes.
I'd imagine it feels very cozy seeing all three of your siblings getting along in one friendly, warm environment.
Food is is one of the best kinds of peace treaties, if you ask me! My dad knows how to use this on his children very, very well! *Laughs*

I hope your heater gets fixed soon, man. Having to double (or even, triple) layer in your one's own house is never fun.

Aaaah... food. Dammit David, you're making me hungry!

I read through the archives, and you seem much happier than at the start, or at the very least more comfortable with expressing everything. If you've answered this before just ignore me, but what prompted you to do this comic in the first place?

I live near the Gulf of Mexico at the bottom of Texas. (Where I live people are really
tolerant of everyone and friendly. I feel like my state has a stigma and that I must
fight it. :C But then again, it's there for a reason... Parts of the state can be rather
terrible.)

And because we're so far South, things get here much more slowly than everywhere else.
We just recently got Vietnamese restaurants here and OH MAN IS IT DELICIOUS. FISHHHHH
SAUCCCCCEEEEEE~

@beldon123: Haha. I don't really see how that's racist. That just sounds like a food preference. I don't enjoy vinegar much but it's a large part of Filipino cuisine, doesn't mean I hate them or anything.

@Odd1Out: Haha, it was really fun seeing the three of them, especially getting along for once. Haha. I guess that's just how cold Miriam and Connor were.

Haha. Your dad sounds like a good man.

Yeah. As much fun as it is to spend the entire day under blankets, it's not that fun, haha.

Ah. I'm sorry. I make myself hungry. I'm hungry now.

@heyonmu: Haha, they bicker a lot but it's always over the smallest things so it's just really funny.

@anon: Oh, hey. Other people seem to have made that observation as well, haha. It must be true then.

Hm. What got me to draw this comic? I think it was when our grandpa died and a lot of family secrets came out in the air, but at the same time it also felt like an end to all the family drama we always had. Having our grandpa died made me look back on our family's history a lot which I wanted to draw out in this comic. I admit I haven't gotten there yet but it's not easy to recount 80 years of family history across so many people either, haha.

I was hoping with a diary comic everyone can get to know my family before I start talking about the past to explain the way we are today. It's just interesting how a chain of event works. It seems like all coincidences but it's not, it's just how things worked out.

Life just seemed so massive to me and I didn't know how to figure things out other than drawing, it's really the only way I know how, haha. I can't be as eloquent as Connor or write stories like Miriam so really all I knew was how to draw comics, haha.

Hope that answered your question, I feel like I lost the point at some point, haha.

@Sir: Ah, y'know. I remember hearing about how border towns in Texas are more, uh. I wouldn't say liberal but... I guess unlike the stereotypical view of Texas, haha.

Oh, man. You had Vietnamese food, huh? I'm impressed you enjoyed fish sauce, I know the smell is quite potent, haha. I'm glad to hear that.

In Vietnam we went to an area that manufactured fish sauce and it was the strongest smelling place I've ever been to.

I actually happened to just start working at a Vietnamese restaurant. I get free meals after my shift and everything there is DELICIOUS :D I will never tire of it! Except peanut sauce, I just don't like peanuts.

[R]

Sir October 17th, 2012, 12:24 pm

@daviddoesntgetit: Heh, yeah, although it's actually a small city (250,000 people) and I
would say most of the people here are actually some-what liberal. Parts of West Texas and most
of South Texas are blue counties plus Austin, Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio. It's
all about the counties.

daviddoesntgetit October 18th, 2012, 10:43 pm

@Tree: Haha, wow! That's excellent to hear. I'm not used to Vietnamese restaurants in areas of low Vietnamese populations so that when I order they can't understand a damn thing I'm saying, haha.

Ah, it's ok you don't enjoy peanut sauce. What's your favorite dish so far?

@Sir: Ah, so I thought! I'm glad my conception wasn't completely off the mark, haha.

I remember watching something about the border between Texas and Mexico and the cowboys living there didn't care about immigrants or whatever, the problem was the fact it was spoiling the beauty.

I see. That's pretty interesting. For us Northern Virginia is quite liberal as well as a large part of Richmond due to the college and hipster scene, haha. Otherwise we are a conservative state, something I tend to forget about.

It's interesting how looking at the specifics of the general lead to new discoveries. The world is quite vast and diverse.

@daviddoesntgetit: Yeah when my co-workers or some customers talk in Vietnamese, I feel really out of place. A lot of the meals are in Vietnamese so I am learning some words even though they're just for food haha. My favorite dish so far is the pho xao.

[R]

daviddoesntgetit October 25th, 2012, 8:29 pm

@Tree: Ah, I'm sure you'll be ok! As long as you're having a good time, haha.

Ah, pho xao, that does sound good right now. I really enjoy pho ap chao, it's like that but the pho noodles are crunchy instead.

Haha, man. I'm getting hungry despite having just ingested a steak.

Tree October 26th, 2012, 4:46 pm

@daviddoesntgetit: Thanks :D It is fun to work there in a weird way. Mmm... that does sound good, ha.
